Forget everything you thought you knew about Silicon Canal…
Well, not everything. It is still the Birmingham tech community created for, and by, the Birmingham tech community.
As in business, which a lot of you will understand, there is importance in pivoting to suit the market needs and the Birmingham tech community market needs have changed a lot since Silicon Canal began 5 or 6 years ago. There is much more support for startups and the people who own or work for them with accelerators and co-working spaces popping up all over the place. There are more meetups than ever before and financial initiatives readily available.
Therefore, it has been necessary to take a step back and look at what Silicon Canal can and needs to be. This is why we have a brand new 8-person leadership team, all of whom play hugely important roles within the community already.
So, after hours of discussions, thoughts, moans and post-it notes (other sticky notes available), we have come up with what we believe to be a vital missing ingredient – enabling enjoyment in your life, all the work, the play and everything in between. You are more than your work, and we want to help you make the most out of life with a welcoming, supportive community where everyone can feel they belong.
No hidden agendas, no fancy incentives (sorry), no sales, and NO exclusions. We want everyone to feel like they are welcomed, supported to grow and that they, YOU, belong in the Birmingham tech community.
So what does this all mean? Well, it means you’ll be seeing our lovely 8 faces everywhere. If you see a Silicon Canal t-shirt wearing individual, you know you can approach without judgement or expectation and they will speak with you, introduce you to others, and help in any way they can. We’ll also be holding more events – watch this space!
But 8 is not enough! With the community growing, we want everyone to be part of the conversation. So we are on the lookout for Silicon Canal Ambassadors. “But there are already loads of Silicon Canal Ambassadors,” I hear you cry! Yes, but we’re asking for people to re-ignite their passion and join up again, Ambassadors 2.0, if you will. The new ambassadors will receive a swag bag of Silicon Canal goodies to become one of those welcoming t-shirt wearing nuggets of joy that help. They will shout loud and clear about the great things happening in our city, in person, on social media and maybe even write a blog or two for this site. Basically we are looking for doers who believe in our mission to welcome and support everyone in the Birmingham tech community to create a true sense of belonging. email email@example.com with the subject ‘I’m in!’ to register your interest.
Silicon Canal. Welcome. Grow. Belong.
