As the curtain draws to a close on another year, we wanted to look back on some of the biggest announcement and best achievements for our industry in our city during 2018.

 5G is coming to town
In one of the biggest pieces of tech news this year, we were delighted when the West Midlands were chosen as the UK’s first multi-city 5G testbed.

The multi-million-pound trial of new high speed connectivity will pave the way for the future rollout of 5G across the UK, making the region the first in the country ready to trial new 5G applications and services at scale.

The future of cars has a home in the second city
Not only were we chosen to trial 5G this year, but we were also chosen as a testbed for autonomous cars. It was announced that Birmingham and Coventry had been chosen to test self-driving cars at special testing centres across both regions.

Headed up by Midlands Future Mobility and backed by government funding, more than 50 miles of roads across Birmingham and Coventry to be used to test the cars on both public roads and specially designed tracks. The tracks will make up the largest, most diverse testing centre in the UK, with smart vehicle monitoring involving 5G-ready wireless radio transmitters and data analytics, meaning the vehicles on the road can communicate with each other.

House of Commons praise
Our tech community was praised for our work to help nurture and grow digital and technology companies in the second city by the Prime Minister.

In a discussion centered around the growing economy in the West Midlands as a whole, Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant and Theresa May both praised the Birmingham tech scene for its work to build such a strong industry, with Fabricant going on to give a shout out to Silicon Canal in supporting the tech sector to continue to grow year on year.
